CONSTIPATION

Definition :

Is the difficulty in passing stools due to hardened stools which may arise from improper digestion or inadequate water intake.

Causes :

The main causes are as follows:
Suppression of the natural urge of defecation, urination, and flatus.
Irregular diet habits, such as eating at irregular times, inadequate food intake, consumption of stale, spicy, hot and very pungent food, etc.
Lack of sleep at night, and sleeping during daytime.
Inadequate intake of water and fluids.
Presence of anorectal disease like anal fissure, fistula, or piles, which cause fear of pain while defecation.

Symptoms:

Passage of very hard stools once a day, or once in 2 or 3 days.
Some times the frequency of stools is 2-3 times a day but the feeling of bowel evacuation is not present.
Pain in abdomen and flatulence is very often associated with constipation.

Do's & Don't :

Food recipes containing Ghee, vegetables, which contain a high amount of roughage or fiber such as green leafy vegetables, should be a part of the diet.
Plenty of water, around 6-8 glasses per day should be drunk. (preferably keep the drinking water in a copper vessel).
Regular food habits such as eating at regular intervals, and eating hot and fresh food is advisable to avoid constipation.

Suggestions :

The abdominal region massaged with sesame oil and fomented with hot water, could bring about some relief in the symptoms.
A glassful of hot water should be consumed immediately after waking up. This stimulates the bowel movements and relieves constipation. It also helps in relieving flatulence.
In mild cases, laxatives such as powder of senna leaves, powder of chebulic myrobalan, or three myrobalans (Triphala powder) etc., can be taken in the dose of ¼ -1/2 teaspoon at night along with hot water.
A glass warm milk with a teaspoon of ghee should be taken every night for chronic constipation. 2-4 teaspoons of warm sesame oil should be taken at night. This smoothens the intestinal walls and makes the passage of stools smooth.

Herbs Can Be Used :

Raw spinach juice should be taken in the dose of 30 ml., twice a day.
300 gms of green grapes should be eaten every day to relieve constipation.
Fruits like papaya, figs and guava also help.
